    Automatic Private IP Addressing

    That was used when you got a 169.254.* IP address.

    Its been desribed in RFC 3927.

    APIPA is just the Microsoft name for Zeroconf networking implementation. (or "Internet Protocol Automatic Configuration" (IPAC))
