    Die Situationistische Internationale (S.I.) existierte als Gruppe von 1957 bis 1972. Die Zahl der Mitglieder schwankte zwischen über 40 Mitgliedern und weniger als zehn, insgesamt waren es über die Zeit ca. 70 Personen.

    Die Situationisten waren europäische Avantgarde-Künstler, die an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Politik, Kunst und Wirklichkeit operierten und sich für die Realisierung der Versprechungen der Kunst im Alltagsleben einsetzten. Sie forderten unter anderem die Abschaffung der Arbeit und der Hierarchien, und arbeiteten an ihrem Konzept der theoretischen und praktischen Herstellung von Situationen, in denen das Leben selbst zum Kunstwerk wird. Einige Situationisten waren in den Ausbruch der Studentenunruhen vom Mai 1968 verwickelt, die auf ganz Frankreich übergriffen und anders als in Deutschland auch Arbeiter und Angestellte erfassten. Situationistische Ideen waren in den folgenden Jahren sehr verbreitet und haben international in Kunst, Politik, Architektur und Pop Spuren hinterlassen, die sich bis in die Gegenwart ziehen.
