Playboy was launched in December of 1953, with Marilyn Monroe as the first Playboy Playmate. The magazine hit the newsstands at a time when the American public, and countries abroad, were ready for a blend of intelligent content and pure sexuality. Playboy was an instant success, no doubt in part due to its first playmate being one of the biggest sex symbols of our time.
