    oer was written in March of 2000 by EQU <equ@equnet.org>. The bot has been entirely written from scratch using the C programming language for efficiency and UNIX portability. The development/testing platform was from day one Red Hat Linux 6.0 i386 (mostly 2.2.1x kernels). The bot also compiles and runs on the following UNIX platforms (maybe others too)

       * Solaris 2.6
       * Digital UNIX 4.0
       * Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.1A
       * HP-UX 10.20
       * IRIX 6.5
       * NetBSD 1.2
       * FreeBSD 4.x

    oer runs also on

       * Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP (using Cygwin)

    oer is a free to use GPL'd (version 2, see COPYING) IRC bot. oer has been tested to work on EQUNet, Ircnet, Efnet, QuakeNet, Undernet, Dalnet, GamesNet and Open Projects Network. The bot provides general channel administration, channel protection and topic handling functionality. oer can log joins & messages from users and both logging of raw IRC traffic and debug output can be optionally switched on. For a complete listing of available features see the user manual.

    Wondering about the name oer? Well, oer is a non Latin 1/ISO-8859-1 version of the word "÷r" which is finnish and would loosely translate into the english word "hummm". Back in March when I began writing oer, the word "÷r" was commonly used on my IRC channels so I chose it as the bot's name. End of story, now you know.

    I wrote oer+MySQL to take advantage of everything a modern relational SQL database has to offer. I chose MySQL as the development RDBMS because of it's availability, licensing and performance. You can download MySQL from the MySQL site or alternatively use a vendor provided package.
