Es steht zu befürchten, dass die Meldung von Heise zur Einführung von Open Source bei Wahlcomputern in Brasilien im Linux-Lager zu Jubelchören führen wird. Das ist allerdings sehr unangemessen. [edit] The Society for Constructive Discordianism

    Controversial scientists
I'm currently reading a book called "Wilhelm Reich In Hell" by Robert Anton Wilson, and in the introduction he mentions some controversial scientists who, like Dr. Wilhelm Reich, had problems with the US government censoring their work and/or legal battles with the US. (Wilhelm Reich, in particular, had all his books and notes seized and burned by the US government in 1957.) I'm already familiar with Dr. Timothy Leary and his work, as well as with Immanuel Velikovsky. However, there are a couple here that I'm not familiar with and am having trouble finding information about:

    * Dr. William Ivy, "formerly a respected physician and a member of the staff of University of Chicago Medical School, was engaged in an extensive legal battle, which lasted eight years and cost him a small fortune, before he was vindicated."

    * Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, a biologist. A British scientific journal called Nature suggested, in the early '80s, that his books should be burned.

That's all the information I have about them so far. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks much! [?]
    A sign from on high!
So last night at work I had to get some tooling out of the tool store. We have a system where you put a little metal disc with a number on it when you take something. The number corresponds to your name. I've been with the company over a year now and I haven't had a number... until recently I guess - I only noticed last night. Guess what my number is?

    My number is 023!

Clearly this is some kind of message from Eris. Not sure what it is, but it's gotta mean something! [?]

    Discordian Cyberspace Masquerade
I know this might not be entirely on-topic. But...

So I got this e-mail about something cool going on in Discordia. I think it's such a great idea that I'm taking it upon myself to tell LJ about it.

    Hail Yes

I hadn't even realized it was Discordia's 50th (or 49th) anniversary. This is cool 'cause we get to celebrate the 50 year mark for two years in a row. It's our Golden Apple anniversary. =)

I love the idea of an online party which brings together Discordians from all sections of the web. It's also cool that it's anonymous. It'll make communicaiton really interesting. I created this journal so that nobody suspects my true identity. :-)

Anyway, there's not a lot of time until the party starts, so I'm trying to pass the invite around as quickly as possible. If you have any ideas for where else we should advertise, please post! Or optimally, you should go there and get some buzz going.

I'll see you guys at the party! Hail Eris! [?]
    Robert Anton Wilson
The Multnomah County Library has a few Robert Anton Wilson books in its collection, but not "Wilhelm Reich In Hell." So I decided to inter-library loan it. Guess how many libraries have that book? Give up? Well, there are nine. Nine! IN THE ENTIRE FREAKING COUNTRY. Only nine libraries in all the USA have a copy of "Wilhelm Reich In Hell"!Some day, when I am rich and famous (crosses fingers in hope), I am going to start a trust fund like Carnegie did, only instead of the money going to build libraries, it will go toward getting books into libraries that ought to be in libraries. Books that a lot of people would be interested in, but which the people who are interested in them are scattered around the country. Like occult books, and controversial titles. But in the meantime, I urge anyone who can afford it to buy a copy of the book - and any other book of a kind that is not often gotten by libraries - and donate it to your local library.

Cross posted to heck and back. [?]
    KallistiCon 2008!

    Fool's Day 2008

Discordians, Dysnomians, Erisians, and others of much ilk...

    Get up! (Get on up!)

    KallistiCon 2008 is coming - June 20-22!

Every year this millennium, we've gotten together in the Bay Area in California. We're not just rehashing gags from the Principia - we're moving forward, practicing chaos in the world.

For the last seven years, we've eaten and drank together, we've made friends with strangers in traffic, we've had rituals and blessings, we've been weird in public, and we've been human with each other. We?ve found the freaks who thought they were the only ones, and taught them - and ourselves - what tribe is supposed to mean.

Some of you will say: "But Discordians are supposed to be disorganized."

    Didn't you know that's just a put-on?

Some of you will say we?re doing it wrong, and only you know the right way to follow Eris.

That's OK. Just quit talking about it and start doing it.

Some will no doubt repeat the tired cliche: "We Discordians tend to stick apart."

Of course we do, but sticking apart is more fun when we do it together.

Throw out your old memes. Greg and Kerry are gone, Bob Wilson is gone, Camden Benares and the other old-timers are gone. Let's honor and respect them. Let's learn from their lives and their teachings. But let's stop trying to be them.

The Principia is your grandma's Discordia. Being an inside joke on the net is your daddy's. What's yours? And who are you doing it with?

I can face my own asshattery when I am called on it.
I had attempted to stir up the community a little, and get some discussion going. Alas, I did it when I was not in a good mood, and I did not put much thought into how I was stirring the pot. The result, as several of you have pointed out, was nothing but asshattery.

My apologies for wanking in the community. [?]
    In re: polls.
I just thought I should make something clear after the poll I posted on April Fools Day. This is my community. It was given to me after [info]ashliana grew tired of this community going in directions counter to what she started it for. She and I have different, if somewhat overlapping interests. I look at this community as a way for wise and experienced Discordians to influence younger, less enlightened, but often more vocal folks. As such, this community is most certainly not a democracy. It is, when I do my job right, a benevolent oligarchy. I'd say a dictatorship, but there are members here who can post things that totally piss me off, but I recognize their point as both valid and enlightening for all.

So, to make this practical, you can vote in polls all you want to, but I will ignore it. Now, say something enlightening in a comment, and I'll pay attention.

    23 Skidoo [?]
And now for something completely different
For the uninitiated, in the 90s a pen and paper rpg called Over the Edge was written.  Its premise: every conspiracy theory, crackpot idea, alien invasion scenario, and similar madness that you have ever heard is TRUE, and they are all centered on a small Mediterranean island called Al Amarja.

One of the groups in Al Amarja are the Cut-Ups, a group of reality terrorists who use surrealistic and absurdist methods to prevent any one faction from taking control of the island and the entire world.  They are a manifestation of the Pan-Dimensional Chaos Boys and have no relationship to any real or surreal irreligious disorganizations.

Anyways, a portion of the Cut-Ups motto is "This is the weather the cuckoo likes" which means, in so many words, that since the Cut-Ups are devoted to the forces of chaos they have no intention of staging a world revolution or illuminating the opposition as things as they are can be pretty effing weird, and this means they have laredy won and simply need to maintain a general sense of blance on the island, only acting en masse when any given faction threatens to actually succeed in world domination.

Thoughts on this?  Does it fit into your view of Erisian thought or is it, as King Mob once so eloquently put it, "Bollocks! Zen fir 'I just can't be bothered.'"  Also, [?]
    On Moderation.
I have, since taking over ownership of this community, had several people question my chaotic nature because I want to make sure we have just enough courtesy and order here to promote our spreading creative disorder in the greater society. Today, I was criticized for telling a member to put an <lj-cut> in a long, dial-up unfriendly, post. I did this not because I wanted to exercise what little power I had here, but because I knew that most people, especially the few poor sods still on slow connections, would benefit from it.

Now, I've used a light hand moderating this community, since we are all Discordians and I don't need to stroke my ego, but I can change that. I have been operating on the assumption that we would have a few rules to keep the community working on the goal of spreading constructive disorder in the world -- just enough keep us from pissing each other off, without being too restrictive. I may be wrong, and members here might not like that sort of order, and would rather have more chaos here, and be able to post what they want how they want. We can do that. We can have no rules here. Now, the down side of that is if I just don't like something, or feel cranky, I might delete posts and users when I feel like it.

You do recognize that this poll was placed on April 1st, and that it was a joke? Your moderator is not going to let this poll influence the way this community operates at all. It has been his community since it was given to him. He has, ever since, benevolently seen this as something he gives to the Discordian community at large. [?]
    Eris' Wand
Like many others, the Discordian school of sorcery makes use of several ritual tools. Chief among these is Eris' wand, a simple yet effective tool to focus one's magical will through. Though possible to purchase, it is reccomended one makes their own wand, though this should not be a problem as someone of average intelligence can create one in 5 minutes.

Simply find a tree branch that is thick and diverges at its top into two separate poles. The two poles symbolize the concepts of order and disorder, for sure. Now, tie some form of elastic between the two poles. This represents superstring theory which, according to my understanding, is science talk for "magic!"

Now perform the W5 Star Wholey Mega Apostolic Banishing Ritual to bless your new Ritual weapon, and go forth into the world to spread nonsense and anarchy.

Eris' wand has been found almost everywhere that Erisian thought is present
Here we have a mighty Erisian Sorceror using this tool to hex invaders in his homeland

    Molly ain't organized.

From images like this I followed a trail of links to pages like Operation Clambake, and from there to the group Anonymous... on March 17th, only two days after their March 15th protests. Curses, Molly missed out on all the fun.

Not like I'm exactly the best informed gal on all this Scientology stuff. Sure, they bought out an organization dedicated to exposing cults and staffed it with their own members, and their founder seems to have spent a lot of time at sea avoiding the IRS and threatening the local coastlines with conquest... but I ain't well informed enough yet to pass judgment.

Anonymous' next move seems to be scheduled for April 18th (or is it the 12th?), but a razorgirl like me is finding their website damn confusing. Strangely enough, there don't seem to be any protests in Washington, DC yet... which would be the easiest for me to get to and check the madness out.

    EggGASM
EGGGASM EggGASM is an annual Golden Apple Seed Mission. It's very simple. The object of the game is to put cool things inside of plastic eggs and hide them for people to find on Easter. This idea originally came from Pinky McFatfat, ASS.

What you put inside the eggs is really up to you. But here are some suggestions:

    • cool pictures

    • One Line Meme Bombs

    • quotes or images from the Principia Discordia

    • quotes from wherever

    • weird facts

    • your own political agenda

    • an absurd political agenda

    • a surreal political agenda

    • money

    • quotes from the Black Iron Prison

    • secrets

    • your phone number

    • bathroom-graffiti style messages

    • fortunes

    • poems

    • whatever you think is cool. Think For Yourself, Shmuck!

Moar information can be found over at the EggGASM Wiki Page, or the EggGASM thread at the Principia Discordia forums.

If you have any moar ideas, belch 'em out over at 23ae.

If you take any pictures, upload them to Flickr and tag them "egggasm". (with three G's!)

If you create any .docs, .pdfs, or lists of stuff to put in eggs, post it to del.icio.us with the tag "egggasm", so it shows up on the OMGASM Mission Feed.
